Genevieve Gauckler’s “a good day” Exhibition

《A Good Day》展について

「《A good day》= 良い日を!

It was quite rare to see such crowded show opening in Fukuoka. Many thanks to all who came to the opening and the show. Most of Genevieve Gauckler’s painting pieces were sold at the opening. Genevieve kept giving autographs to fans for 2 and half hours with no breaks.

Prior to the show opening, there were 2 sessions of children’s workshops “Let’s Make Own Calendar with Genevieve!” which were  fully booked with the reservations. Genevieve really enjoyed to work with kids as kids’ approach to drawings inspired by her works was sometimes unpredictable. All kids were happy as they made their own calendars with Genevieve with a lot of fun..

Special thanks to : Koro Shibasaki and all Hightide’s staff, Fukuoka Parco Staff, director, Soichiro Nomiyama and Kota Saitoh, volunteer painting assistants, Kohei Yoshii and Yumi Yamada. This show could not be possible without you. Many thanks to Genevieve and Claude. Great appreciation to all audiences and GG fans who came to the opening and visited the show.

This show goes on until Nov. 23.

About the «A Good Day» Exhibition
«A good day». These words sound like a cliché, like some words we may hear dozens of times a day without paying attention to it. «I quite like daily life, because I strongly believe that daily life is not banal or boring, on the contrary, I think it’s poetic, magic and full of creativity» says Genevieve Gauckler, who is exploring with this show the different sides of this daily life: love, happiness, nature, little things, little details. Her work is mainly based on creating characters. These characters look cute, energetic, generous, they express some positive feelings, they try to do their best.

In a way they illustrate this famous saying of a Chinese Zen master: «Everyday is a good day», which means that every day, every situation is a good way to improve oneself, to be more kind with oneself and with others. There’s something sweet, heartfelt in the artworks she’s showing now in Fukuoka. «But I’m always trying not to be moralistic and I always try to put a certain sense of humour in my work. I’m working seriously but I don’t take myself seriously.» I usually perceive things as absurd, sometimes I feel like an alien visiting Planet Earth, so many details of life look weird to me, bizarre. And sadness is very close to happiness. What’s good at this time may be seen as bad a bit later. «I like expressing this complexity by creating simple artworks.»

She adds: «I’m super-happy to show these new and mainly unpublished artworks here in Japan because I’m Japan-crazy. I’m learning so many things by travelling in Japan, daily life is really full of teachings, and the main one for me is that every detail is important, every action has be made fully consciously. It’s true with food, with the way people behave, interact. I’m enjoying each every moment of my stay here.»
