I was touched by Sho Watanabe ‘s artworks for the first time when I coincidently visited the art gallery “Green Room” which is located on one of the main streets in Waikiki, Honolulu. It is owned by Jun Yoshimura who runs the “Green Room Festival” in Yokohama, Japan with his partner, that focuses on the surf cultures featuring various music, arts, films and photography. By the way, Jun Yoshimura used be the vocalist of Japan’s well-known rock band “WINO” from late 90′s to 2002. Now, he forms a band called “Linus” in Hawaii and is still active as a musician.

Let’s go back to the story about Sho. Sho’s artworks immediately caught my eyes the most, amongst several other artists works. Many works are with surfin’ theme and they are expressed with humor and heartwarming feelings. With sympathies to his minds toward surf, sea and nature, his works give calmness to viewers. This feeling is similar to the ones when artworks of well-known surf arts by Andy Davis, Jeff Canham and Thomas Campbell are seen, whom I used to work with. It includes gentleness and warmness.

The origin of these feelings were discovered later on, when I met Sho in person in Harajuku. At first sight, the charisma could be seen in him which only true surfers could have. He told me that he used to work as a life-saver. So he is not only surfer and is prominent sea-man at the same time. Enjoying sea deeply and strength brought up through his experiences back up and must naturally give those humors, calm, gentle and warm feelings into his works when he creates.

Having great expectations for his future creations and works, I would love to be in the sea possibly sometime in future.
